Attending physician takes the stand in Stephan retrial

June 6, 2019

“He had to retract a number of the statements that he had made” says Stephan

It was day four of the Stephan retrial.  David and Collet Stephan were convicted in 2016 for failing to provide the necessaries of life for their 18-month old son Ezekiel who died of bacterial meningitis.  The couple was granted a retrial by the Supreme Court of Canada.  Doctor Lloyd Clarke took the stand today. He was one of the first attending physicians in the Cardston Hospital. David Stephan says todays testimony did not line up with the doctor's original testimony from 2016.

Doctor Clarke came under fire in 2018 for telling a group of Indigenous people, who were standing outside a convenience store in Cardston, to "get a job".  He also asked them if they wanted a prescription for Tylenol 3 which is an addictive painkiller.
