AUPE launches constitutional challenge against government’s Bill 1

June 23, 2020

The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees launched a constitutional challenge against the government’s Bill 1 today. AUPE says the act violates the rights of Albertans to protest peacefully. Union President Guy Smith says allowing the bill to pass, will take away freedom of speech from all Albertans.

"We believe it fundamentally denies individuals of their charter rights. The right to assembly, the right to association, the right to freedom of expression. Anytime a law looks like its breeching those rights you have to respond in a legal process," says AUPE President, Guy Smith.

AUPE is waiting for a written response from the government before they look at next steps.
