AUPE members claim victory over UCP in Bill-9 battle

July 31, 2019

The union successfully argued at Court of Queen’s Bench for an injunction on Bill-9, the Public Sector Wage Arbitration Deferral Act, to allow wage arbitration to go ahead as negotiated in good faith by AUPE members and their employers. Justice Macklin made the decision to uphold the collective bargaining rights of AUPE workers.

“We fought for the rights of workers and we won. The judge agreed with us that the government cannot arrogantly deny our collective bargaining rights,” said Guy Smith, president of AUPE in a press release.

The union represents 95,000 Alberta workers.

In a phone interview Vice President Susan Slade said this injunction doesn't mean Bill-9 has gone away, and that AUPE will continue to picket the bill for other workers.
