AUPE unhappy with UCP back to school relaunch

July 22, 2020

One group that is not happy about the UCP's back to school relaunch is the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.

The group says that the governments plans are not putting health and safety first.  The AUPE is also calling for the rehiring of approximately 20,000 support staff who were laid off when schools closed last March.

"The cleaning standards that are going to have to be higher than they were before COVID-19 means you (will) need extra staff. Everything's got to be wiped down all the time," says AUPE Vice President, Michael Dempsey.

The province says they plan on reopening schools under "near normal" operations.
