Bill 47 - Arguments for and against

November 19, 2020

A new bill being proposed by the UCP, Bill 47, is receiving some backlash from the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees. The union says the bill, which is aimed at improving worker safety, will end up taking away rights from those workers.

Meanwhile, Alberta Labour Minister Jason Copping disagrees. He counters by saying Bill 47 will improve workplace health and safety but will also ensure worker's compensation is sustainable.

If Bill 47 passes most changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Act will take effect September 1, 2021. The province says most changes to the Worker's Compensation Act would take effect on January 1 of next year.
