Birthright to close doors after nearly four decades

June 17, 2019

The pro-life organization Birthright will be shutting their doors later this year.

After 39 years of serving Lethbridge and area, their board has made the decision to close the Lethbridge office in the fall of 2019. The main reason for their decision is the arrival of the Lethbridge Pregnancy Care Centre approximately six years ago.

Pregnancy Care Centre keeps full-time hours whereas Birthright only operates with volunteers at certain hours and days of the week. This has resulted in Birthright's clientele dwindling to a third of its previous numbers.

Executive Director, Sandra Baker says they're currently referring all new clients to the Pregnancy Care Centre and that they're going to be donating some of their baby clothes to them.

Baker says that over the years of Birthright being open, they’ve helped to save approximately 25 babies each year, which after 39 years works out to nearly one thousand babies.
