Controlling COVID-19 spread in shelters

September 4, 2020

A homeless shelter in downtown Calgary is working to contain an outbreak of COVID-19 after five people staying there tested positive for the virus. The shelter has a second location in Lethbridge and BCN visited the area to learn more about the precautions being taken to stop the spread.

In Lethbridge, Alpha House provides an immediate safe shelter for withdrawal management of individuals under the influence of substances.  Along with relationship-focused supports, they offer showers, food, and laundry - which could spell a recipe for COVID spread,  Communications & Funds Development Coordinator for the shelter, Shaundra Bruvall says the shelter follows strict guidelines to reduce the spread.
