Exploring a Ward system not an option for City Council

November 25, 2019

How well would a ward system be in our city as opposed to a city council? That was the question posed in a resolution in City Hall this afternoon.

The resolution was introduced by City Councillor Mark Campbell who wanted to explore the option of creating a citizen committee to find out how a ward system would work here in Lethbridge. But it would come at a price tag of $10,000 to $80,000.

It was defeated 5-4 because some councillors believe this is the time to be tightening the city’s purse strings and not spending tens of thousands of dollars to have citizens explore an option of how effective a ward system would be. Other councillor members believed this option would also limit access to city council if the public has to go through a respective ward member...rather than approaching any council member with issues.
