Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge goes virtual

May 6, 2020

Many in Lethbridge are set to take part in a virtual stair climb. The event, organized by Wellspring Calgary is geared towards fundraising for community-based programs which assist cancer patients and their loved ones. BCNs Ainsley ORiley spoke with organizers and sponsors of the event.

Each year, hundreds of firefighters from across the globe climb the stairs of Calgary’s BOW tower.  Wellspring Calgary, cancer support centre hosts the event.

"I would love southern Alberta come to Calgary. We actually have expanded, believe it or not — worldwide," says Wellspring Events Manager, Karen O'how.

The physically tasking endeavour isn’t going to be cancelled because of COVID-19. Instead, participants are going to time their climb, and find somewhere locally to take part.

"Climb where they can in a safe manor where they're distancing — send out some options for where you can climb in different locations," adds O'how.

Event partner, SpeedStairs, a unique workout equipment will be placing their gear at various locations in southern Alberta.  They’ve suggested training at Indian Battle park, and beyond.

"We'll just get as many as we can in southern Alberta. We can do this in a virtual setting. We could actually do some of the climbs right at the fire-halls too," says Marketing and Events coordinator, Paul Wolsey

In 2019 about 600 firefighters fundraised just under $500,000 for the campaign. This years goal was $600,000 but due to COVID-19, many nonprofits have been forced to restructure their goals.
