Highway 3 accident caused by driver going wrong direction

September 13, 2020

Fort MacLeod RCMP were on scene of a serious two vehicle collision on Highway 3 near the Monarch turnoff late Saturday afternoon. Prior to the collision, an eyewitness who was traveling west towards Fort MacLeod, says he saw a car travelling on the wrong side of the road and had to pull over to avoid hitting him. He called RCMP to report it at 4:01 p.m. but moments later the car hit another vehicle.

According to RCMP, police immediately responded, however while en route additional calls were received that the eastbound vehicle had hit a westbound SUV causing a head on collision, west of the Monarch turnoff.

RCMP say the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle at fault, was airlifted to Calgary with serious injuries.  The driver had been traveling east in a westbound lane. Two occupants of the SUV were taken by ambulance to Calgary with serious but non life threatening injuries

Traffic was rerouted for several hours while the RCMP, Fire and EMS attended to the injured and began an investigation. A collision analyst also attended to conduct a scene examination.

The collisions remains under investigation.
