Metis in Lethbridge commemorate Louis Riel Day

November 17, 2020

Each year on November 17, Metis across Canada commemorate the history and culture of their people. They also celebrate the legacy of Louis Riel. Ainsley O'Riley caught up with some local Metis who explain how much this time of year means to them.

Tuesday marks the 150th anniversary of the Metis Nation's confederation. On November 17, each year Manitoba's founder and fearless leader of the Metis people, Louis Riel, is honoured.  In Lethbridge, one-third of indigenous people are Metis.

"For us the significance of this day, and being able to have this recognized at City Hall is a major step in reconciliation," says President of the Lethbridge and Area Metis, Adam Browning.
