More job cuts expected at University of Lethbridge

June 11, 2020

The University of Lethbridge is calling for more job cuts despite a reduction of 83 employees, or 7% of their overall staff, since last November.

In a letter sent to university faculty and staff on Tuesday, university president Mike Mahon says the U of L needs to reduce their expenditure budget by 8.6 million dollars during the current fiscal year. "This means the U of L is in a worst case scenario", according to Mahon.
He goes on to say, "while we had hoped the substantial budget reduction steps taken in recent months had brought us within striking distance of a balanced budget for 2020-21, the reality is we face a significant budget challenge that will require further action," says Mahon.

In the letter Mahon points out that more workers will have to be laid off, although he doesn’t indicate when.  Bridge City News reached out to the university today, but they did not respond to our request for an interview.
