October 24th is World Polio Day

October 24, 2019

In 1988 there were over 300,000 cases of polio worlwide. Today there are less than 100 cases...and it's because of the polio vaccine. October 24th is World Polio Day - a day to raise awareness of the importance of vaccinating against the virus that can lead to paralysis and possibly death.

Jeannette Rocher speaks with a woman who was left with residual paralysis from childhood when she caught polio during the epidemic that hit Canada in the late 1940s.

Meanwhile, Rotarians worldwide have played a part in the eradication of the disease (along with the World Health Organization and Center for Disease Control, among others). But it's a 40 million dollar effort to keep the virus at bay.

The Rotary Club of Lethbridge is holding an online auction to raise funds to continue eradication efforts.  That auction closes at midnight on October 24th.
