One firefighter taken to hospital in stable condition following west side fire

One firefighter was taken to hospital for precautionary measures and is in stable condition following a west side fire that broke out just before 8 a.m. today.

When fire fighters arrived, they saw the top portion of an apartment complex on fire on West Highlands Blvd, not far from Save On Foods.

All four stations responded to the blaze that impacted 36 units in the complex. The fire was contained by 9:20 a.m. and fully extinguished just after 10:00 a.m. Crews remain on scene to manage any possible hot spots.

All residents were safely evacuated to a nearby parking lot while they awaited emergency social services. The City, working with Alberta Health Services and Canadian Red Cross managed supports for those on scene arranging medical needs, transportation and lodging. Residents will be unable to return to the building due to heavy fire, smoke and water damage. Anyone who evacuated and left the scene can connect with the Red Cross at 1-888-800-6493 for support.

The fire appears to have started on a second floor balcony and spread to the third floor and attic of the building. A fire investigation is underway into the cause.
