ARCHES loses government funding after audit reveals mismanagement

July 16, 2020

The province of Alberta is pulling funding for ARCHES in Lethbridge following an audit which revealed financial mismanagement. The findings include undocumented or inappropriate expenses that were charged to Canada's most widely used supervised consumption site.

The audit found more than 1.6 million dollars in provincial funding unaccounted for due to missing documents from 2017 and 2018. The audit also revealed that one executive's salary amounted to about $343,000. That is a dramatic increase from the $87,000 salary recorded in 2018. Of that $343,000 - $72,000 was charged in overtime expenses that the executive did not receive clearance for.

ARCHES received more than 14 million dollars in taxpayer money over the past two years.

Reaction has been swift from the announcement that the province was pulling funding from ARCHES. Ainsley O'Riley has the story.
