SCS may not have funding in new year

November 6, 2019

The provincial government may be cutting funding for the supervised consumption and injection site at ARCHES.

In fact, funding may be removed for all safe injection sites across the province including Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer. A review is being conducted by the UCP right now, and the final decision will not be made until March 31st. Lethbridge East MLA Nathan Neudorf, says that he has heard the concerns of local residents regarding the SCS.

"The system as it is right now is not working. So, whether that means more services...intox, detox, treatment and recovery, or closing the site down. I think it's a sense of urgency that's becoming more common. I have relayed that to the minister at length."

According to the provincial government, Albertas seven supervised sites reported nearly 400 thousand visits between January 2018 and June of this year.
