To prevent wildfires, city brings in experts: a herd of goats

June 4, 2020

After successfully grazing invasive weeds last summer, the City of Lethbridge has hired the same herd of local goats again this year to continue grazing weeds in Alexander Wilderness Park and Indian Battle Park.

Invasive weeds such as leafy spurge, wormwood, thistle, crested wheat grass and brome grasses will act as food for the goats.

The 200 goats are managed by a herder and dogs that are trained to move and protect the goats from predators. Residents are reminded to keep dogs out of the area and not to pet the herd dogs or goats while they are working.
