Update from Ryan Vandervlis

October 18, 2018

Ryan Vandervlis is back after months recovering from severe burns in Calgary.

Vandervlis spoke with media today about his current condition after being released from the Foothills Hospital.

"I don't think there was a square-inch of my hospital room that wasn't covered in a picture, or a motivational poster," he said of the support received from friends and fans.

The 20 year-old forward was one of three former Hurricanes injured in a campfire incident on June 16, 2018. He says his focus now is building strength and muscle mass, admitting a nearly 30 pound weight loss.

"Half the battle is just getting that weight back on," he says.

The Red Deer native joined the Lethbridge Hurricanes for the 2014-2015 season and has become a leader in the community and role model for young hockey players.

Vandervlis is back with his Lethbridge billet family with his sights set on playing again. He says he'll travel to Calgary and Red Deer appointments often.
