Volunteer foot patrol gets thumbs up from downtown residents and businesses

May 3, 2019

The Watch, a volunteer-based patrol program in its third day of operation is already showing results.

One of the new programs the Lethbridge Police Service rolled out to deal with the city's drug crisis is the new Watch program. Members completed their training, received their red uniforms and have been visible in the city's downtown core. So far members of Watch say they have received a positive response from the community.

The program is designed to connect the community with city services such as Police, EMS, social work and transportation, as well as report needle debris.

“We’re here to observe.” says Jeff Hansen, Manager of The Watch program. “The people are happy, businesses are very happy, so we’re going in the right direction."

The Watch was modelled after programs in Vancouver and Winnipeg.
